Head of Tax / Tax Director positions in industry and across financial services cover a diverse range of roles, and can either be on a stand-alone basis or leadership & management over a team of typically between 2 and 50 tax professionals within larger multinationals.
Typical backgrounds of Heads of Tax are corporate & international tax professionals with 10 or more years’ experience in tax, in most cases with an ACA and/or CTA qualification and tax training from a Big 4 firm, and quite often a combination of Big 4 tax and heavyweight in-house tax management experience with mid to large international businesses. In terms of further career progression, and depending on the size of the organisation, a Head of Tax could progress to a Head of Tax & Treasury role, or a broader finance role e.g. combined tax & corporate finance capacity. In some cases, a Head of Tax can progress to a FD role, although it is likely that they will have spent some of their career in a broader finance role at a senior level to achieve this.
